Beside American and European databases, in August 2015 I started India Car Database (containing car specifications and features, extracted from Carwale.com), this increased traffic from India and strangely some of them were requesting things completely different than what I was selling, for example database of car OWNERS with registration number, name, address, profession, phone, email, insurance expiry date, etc (nobody from western world ever asked me this!).
I made a statement on India Car Database page that I DON’T provide data about car owners, but it just made website to appear in Google for unwanted keywords and brought even more people asking for what I stated that I don’t have. So I moved that piece of text on this separate page with NOINDEX tag.
Western-world people read website first, download sample Excel file to understand what data I am selling, and if they are interested, contact me. Indian people lack good manners. Some of them send messages everywhere is a chat available within few seconds after opening website, without reading what data I have and what I don’t have, sometimes asking several questions without explaining clearly from 1st message what they are looking for, effectively wasting my time from serving customers buying the data I have.
So where you can get vehicle registration data?
The only way to get car registration data legally and up-to-date is to apply in vahan.nic.in, they have over 200 million vehicles in database “The Ministry has decided to offer the services to different stake holders like Banks, Insurance Companies etc on payment basis.” If you do apply, please inform me what are their prices.
I am not from India and I am not a company eligible to apply for Vahan, and even if I was, would have been illegal to resell their data on a website like mine, where anyone can make payments and download files.
If you do a google search “car owners database” you see at least 10 sites selling personal data illegally, all them from India, a country where personal data protection laws are almost null and email/SMS spamming is national sport. They contains a small number of records and does not come with updates, they are most likely databases of users registered in some website that was hacked or a corrupted employee tried to make extra money by selling their internal database. Vehicle registration authority do not keep records of emails and phone numbers, but only of residence address. Furthermore, most drivers do not even use email!
Weird news
In April 2019 been contacted by a strange person claiming to have database of customers from all new car dealerships across India, 1.5 million records. He was speaking very bad english mixed with hindi and we didn’t understood each other, when I asked for a SAMPLE with few rows to see what details he have about each car buyer/owner, he said “bulk orders only” and asked me to do bank transfer. How I can pay without knowing what I get?
I have his phone and email, he is living in Mumbai. I am not from India so I cannot meet him. Is there anyone from Mumbai who can help me and meet him in person, check database before paying, then share database with me (I can pay you half of the price of database) then I will sell it to other people interested?
In 2022 someone informed me that got a database of car registration and owner name from RTO (Regional Transport Office). He did not gave any more details despite that I asked him:
- Is there a particular URL on RTO where someone can buy data?
- Or you must contact RTO in order to get data?
- Anyone can get data from RTO or only companies registered in India?
- How much does cost…?
