Making of

Trying to make a complete list of cars produced in entire world and understand which model is the successor of which model, I started in 2001 (at 12 years old) to write list of models in Notepad (one TXT file for each brand), sorted by class, including years of production (no technical specifications).

In 2003 I combined the TXT files into a single file Car Models List .DOC. I had a hobby to make printer-friendly documents in Word (although I never printed it and I guess that nobody will print this).

Same year I also started Car Models Timeline .XLS, same data displayed in an easy-to-visualize timeline chart. Brands with less than 2 continuous model lines are excluded from Timeline (they are included in List).

I published on website in 2011, Car Models List and Car Models Timeline were free products (a plain link to download full files).

Since December 2012 I offer an Excel version of Car Models list, suitable for programming and web development. Since web developers are supposed to make profit, the Excel database is a paid product.

I continued adding new cars in both Word and Excel versions, but after 2013 I no longer checked the .DOC version against Excel version to guarantee completion. In 2015 I abandoned Word version and provided updates only for Excel version (list of updates).

Coverage

All cars produced in Europe, all cars and trucks produced in America, and all cars produced in Asia for European market.

Due to difficulties about multi-market model lineups, the Car Models List .DOC is NOT COMPLETE for cars produced in Asia for domestic market or for American market (I added Asian models targeting American market only in Car Models List Worldwide .XLS in 2013).

Note for Timeline: the colored bars show when each model was launched, NOT when production ended. Some models or some body versions remained in production few more years after their successor was launched. Example: Skoda Octavia I was produced 1996-2010 but the color bar shows 1996-2003 because in 2004 was launched Octavia II).

List of updates Car Models List

2011: 65 brands on 70 pages. 195 KB file.
June 2012: 75 brands on 80 pages, 266 KB file.
November 2012: 88 brands on ? pages, ? KB file
March 2014: 119 brands on 100 pages, 267 KB file.
May 2015: 138 brands on 62 pages, 421 KB file. First change of format in its 12-year history. Previous releases had each brand starting on a new page (except about 20 minor brands which were showed on the last 4 pages of file), this caused many pages to be mostly white with few row of text at top… the 2015 edition have entire list of models on 2 columns with NO page breaks, this provide a constant amount of text on every page. Added an empty low below class too, not just above, to make the text better spaced apart.

List of updates Car Models Timeline

June 2012 edition: 69 brands included.
March 2014 edition: 86 brand included, 547 KB file.
May 2015 edition: 97 brands included, 595 KB file.

Reason of abandoning

Although I was updating the files every month, I decided in January 2013 (the date I launched Car Models List .XLS as paid download) to not publish on website new updates for Car Models List .DOC and Car Models Timeline .XLS for free download, instead I let the November 2012 edition (88 brands) and invited people to contact me for updates, to track if does worth to continue updating them.

In just 1 year, the files were downloaded about 400 times, but only 2 people contacted me. People either found the files useless, either were not interested in updates, either they got what they wanted for FREE and did not bothered to contact me.

So, in November 2013 I did a FULL update for all files and I posted SAMPLES only, inviting people to contact me if they are interested in full version for FREE, by this way people would have received last updated version.

In 2014 I published via Simple eCommerce plugin at €0.00 but since the plugin is for paid downloads only, you still had to go through PayPal checkout and do a null payment, so I posted also a SAMPLE file and a message “Contact me if you want this, I will email you for FREE“, in one year, only 3 people contacted me for Car Models Timeline and 1 for Car Models List.

In May 2015 I replaced Simple eCommerce plugin with Easy Digital Downloads which allow FREE downloads so the Car Models List & Timeline could be purchased for FREE via Add to cart.

I though that this help raising sales of paid products in case someone don’t trust the system of emailing download link automatically. Contrary happened: by August 2015 about 50 people have purchased the FREE products and probably disappointed by little amount of data included in free products, left website without checking samples of paid products (only 1 did paid for Car Models List in Excel afterwards). Meantime customers who who purchased PAID products, did without doing a test purchase of a FREE product.

I emailed about 10 of those who purchased free products, nobody replied.

Hi there!
I see that you purchased Car Models List and Car Models Timeline on 25 july 2015….
I need your feedback to decide I should continue offering these products for FREE
In May 2015 I changed website plugin to one that allow free downloads, the idea was people that do not trust the automatic delivery system to do a TEST purchase of a free product, then purchase the actual database they are needing, hoping to increase sales. But contrary happened, sales felt down since May. I done a lot of changes last 2 months but still did not succeeded to bring sale volume to previous level. Maybe offering too much for free is the reason?
I see that you opened the SAMPLE files of Year-Make-Model, Car Models Database, Car Models & Engines, etc…. but didn’t purchased any of them after purchasing the free products.
Are these two free products really satisfying you thus you don’t need to purchase the paid products? Or you were disappointed by the free products thus didn’t returned to purchase more? Or you purchased just because saw them FREE and you were not really interested in them, probably you deleted them afterwards?

In September 2015 I set free products price at ONE EURO with a message to contact me if you want for free.

During whole year of 2016:
Car Models List DOC got 4 sales at €1 plus 1 people requesting it for FREE.
Car Models Timeline XLS got 7 sales at €1 plus 2 people requesting it for FREE.
Meantime the Excel version of Car Models List (€24-45) got 50 sales .

To turn these projects into regularly updated products I should increase the price, but as you can see, even if I offer them for FREE on request basis, number of people requesting them are insignificant. It’s pretty obvious that they are useless products and deserve to be abandoned. I will focus on bigger databases that generate more sales.

  1. We are looking for certain information as mentioned below:

    • Model wise sales and production data for following vehicle types, for the year 2015:
    o Trucks
    o Trailers
    o Buses

    • Key countries to be covered are:
    o China
    o India
    o Japan
    o Germany
    o Belgium
    o Holland
    o Canada
    o U.S.
    o Brazil

    1. From me you can get database of car specifications, I do not collect sales data!
You should contact automobile associations of each country, for example http://www.vda.de in Germany. Full list in http://www.oica.net/category/about-us/members/
If you want me to contact all them, I may do this only if there will be multiple people asking for same thing. But combining model breakdown from each country will be quite difficult, because one country may breakdown by BMW E36 and E46 while other country may breakdown by 3-Series sedan, touring, coupe, cabrio.

  2. I need just the makes and models of all the vehicles sold in the U.S. foreign and domestic. I would like it in xls format just two columns with no headers. Building a system for a locksmith client. Thanks so much.

  3. Hey. Can I take a crack at the full (.DOC) file? I just registered a business in the US for the sale of auto-parts and accessories. I currently own a very expensive database of year makes and models that I acquired through a previous employer from 2016 and I’d like to compare the data. You may have some information I’m missing which will definitely be the case considering my data is from 60-2016, I think. Maybe I’ll find some errors in either my data or the document file. I do however think it would be much easier if you just sent me the excel version and saved me some time. If not, then I’ll gladly check the document file out and log any time spent analyzing and parsing the document into a working table format. I’m still way behind on development and not making any profit due to the crazy competition on sales of auto-parts, I have to sell cheap to make a few cents so “free” is exactly what I’m looking for lol 🙂

    Would appreciate it, Thanks!

    1. How expensive is your previous database?
Since business is US and separate row for each year, you need to use https://www.teoalida.com/cardatabase/year-make-model/
Original Car Models List .DOC does NOT include Japanese models made specifically for United States. It is complete for European market + domestic cars from United States. So you can’t compare my DOC with an US database.

  4. The database was specifically year make and model – however it came with tire fitment tables. It was roughly $1900 per year. It’s all tested for accuracy. Explains the price. It was from the company TGP-SOLUTIONS and I’m not sure which package we had, but I think it’s the tgpBrand catalog. Along with which I saw tgpSize as well. It’s very specific on tires which is my primary selling item. What can you do on the catalog price?

  5. Hi, Im currently in need for a full car database and I am short of time.
Please, I will appreciate if it can be provided for me.
